NAME: Harry Dresden

AFFECTION: Perpetually craving it, perpetually mistrusting of it.

Generally, Harry’s not much of a touchy-feely guy. He shakes hands, he claps folks on the shoulder, sometimes he fumbles through Billy’s terribly complicated hand gestures ( seriously what is with you furballs this isn’t a gang initiation oh but maybe it is ), sometimes he leans on folks or has them lean on him. It’s actually pretty impartial and distant of him. He doesn’t like hugs as much as folk think, he doesn’t like his person or his clothes being snagged at, he doesn’t like kisses on the cheek, or at all. He’s got Reasons. The Reasons are Extensive Trauma.

Genuine human contact is, despite it all, something he craves and needs so that he can function sanely. Call it unconscious need or him being a dumbass, but the little moments with the little touches, the parts where he can wrap himself around someone and doze off? Those are moments where you can tell he trusts someone. ( And you bet your bottom dollar that he’s still naive stupid desperate innocent(?) enough to believe in a notion like “True Love”. Even if it comes with a white picket fence, which is a whole other can of worms and is actually unhealthy for him to adhere to. )

RELATIONSHIPS: Difficult topic. Olde Heterosexual gone pretty nondiscriminating due to being around Fae for about a year. White picket fence dreams are deeply damaging for him to hold onto.

VIOLENCE: Anything and everything. Harry is a wizard, which are the heavyweight champions among magic-users in his universe. Even among them, he's a unique case — a guy legitimately bred like the Kwisatz Haderach, to be able to hunt and kill eldritch entities that most can't even bear to consider. Magic, weapons and a motormouth all lend to his spell-slinging, and he's gone toe to toe with plenty of supernatural entities. I'd LIKE to avoid him getting into fisticuffs too often because of his weight class, or at least counterbalance the combat with PLOT reasons for it!! He does get beaten to high hell often enough, though. He's not immune to much of anything, and a bit of a glutton for injury, but his willpower is EXCEPTIONALLY high.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION: ( APPEARANCE ) PB is Manish Dayal. A man who was used hard, scarcely fed and left to scar over. With dark hair and dark eyes, Dresden is an absolute beanpole of a creature with lean, wolfish appeal and ribs you can count with the naked eye. He's littered with evidence of a difficult, violent life — the most visible of which being a long scar that runs from temple to chin, bisecting his right eye and mouth. For a big guy, he's whipcrack fast and knows exactly how much space he fills in any environment. Never meets anyone's eyes, entirely on purpose.

The Dresden Files has problems, let's not avoid admitting that. While still a deeply engrossing and morbidly fun romp through urban fantasy-land, there's still some content that I actively refer to in the context of roleplay. Please be aware of the following content warnings, and note that I have only added what is important to his characterization — not every CW for the series.

— Sexism. Without skirting the issue, Harry has historically had a low-level misogynistic streak throughout his life. His relationships with and ability to relate to women has, arguably, been stunted from a young age and it is only in recent years that he's actually unpacked any of the innate misogyny within his head. Arguably, the source of his misogyny is not a genuine dislike of women, but the influences of others upon him: his godmother, a literal fairy, fluctuated between inhuman maternal affection and seduction; his psycho-sexual development as a teenager was intentionally manipulated by an authority figure; his next authority figure was an older man who Literally Fought in the French & Indian War and thus cannot be trusted to have had progressive views of sex/gender/sexuality.

There is also the matter of his brain being deepfried due to...

— Sexual abuse. While he does not conceptualize it as such, there's no doubt that Harry has been abused throughout his life, both as a minor and as an adult by authority figures and enemies alike. This has resulted in his reluctance, rejection and outright inability to acknowledge the sexual interest of others — men, or women. It also severely stunted his sexual identity, fixating him strongly on the "heteronormative ideal" — a wife, kids and a white picket fence — as a defensive mechanism over his loss of control.

— Incest/pseudo-incest. He was raised alongside and manipulated to imprint on his adoptive sister; has been in a fake situationship with his half-brother. His brain is soooooooooo deepfried.

— Mass murder/arguable genocide. At the end of Changes ( Book 13 ), Harry turns a bloodline curse meant to kill his family line, beginning with his young daughter and escalating up to his grandfather, on the Red Court vampires. This has the result of killing every Red Court vampire in the world, ending an entire sub-species in the span of a few minutes. Whether they are monsters/monstrous or not, the subject is a sensitive one.

— Suicide. By proxy.

I have no problems with any of these things being addressed and explored in-character, as they're all important variables in regards to his character. I have no intention of forcing fellow players into situations where they are confronted, or forced to play with the connotations unexpectedly.

Dresden is a motormouth who references both mainstream and historical pop culture like a shotgun going off. He mainly references literature, movie media and radio. Chances are, if any of those exist in real life by THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ~2012, he'd be able to make mention of it. It also means he could handily recognize a character from media in crosscanon.
